Two Lists, One Day
The lyric sheet of "You Were Enough Today." holds two lists: what was left unfinished, and who smiled because of you. We count each and ask whose eyes wrote it.
The design document for the eighth song of dear(you); vol.1, "You Were Enough Today." (Korean title 「오늘도 충분했어.」), states its theme like this (our translation): at the end of each day we recall what we did badly before what we did well, and this song sets that habit down for a moment and tells the person who got through the day, for the first time, "you worked hard." Read the lyric sheet and you find two lists. This post counts how long each one is and whose eyes it was written through.
First, the scope. We read the lyric sheet in the song's design document (Korean and English versions) and its style notes. The document was written on 2026-07-04 when the song was commissioned, so what is actually sung may differ, and we did not check it against the audio. Everything said about sound is a requested specification. The music is produced with AI (Suno). Lyrics are AI-drafted and reviewed by a person.
The first list: what was left unfinished
Verse 1 looks back on the day and the unfinished things come to mind first. There are three entries: the mail I didn't answer, the schedule pushed back a little, the small checkboxes still left unchecked. All of them are nouns that sit outside the speaker, like objects or calendar entries. Verse 2 then draws the owner of the habit: someone who remembers what went wrong far longer than what went right, and who, even when praised, says "it's not enough yet" first.
The second list: because of you
The pre-chorus brings a different list. Today, too, someone smiled because of you, and someone had a slightly gentler day because of you. There are two entries. This list is written not in nouns but in people and verbs, and not through the speaker's eyes but through "someone's." The very next line says where the list sits: "And yet you yourself passed right by, never knowing." The first list is one the person already holds; the second is one they did not see, so the song reads it out for them.
"Were enough" is past tense
The predicate of the title and the chorus is "were enough." In the Korean sheet the equivalent, 「충분했어」, appears twice in the chorus and once in the final chorus. In English, "enough" shows up four times in the whole sheet, and one of them is the negative one in Verse 2, "it's not enough yet." The rest are verdicts on a day that has already passed: "you were enough," "already enough." The chorus's "a little late was okay, a little short was okay too" is past tense as well. You can set that beside the unfinished "not enough yet," but the document does not say it was designed that way, and we only note that the verb forms are what they are.
The world's "more," the song's "more"
The bridge writes what the world says as four demands: do better, faster, more, more perfectly. The song takes this up with "but I, for today at least, want to say something different," and goes on with "It's okay to come slowly," "It's okay to rest a little," and "just as you are, a truly good person." The final chorus negates two things, and the Korean sheet has two "more"s (더), one in each: "You don't have to prove anything more," "You don't have to try any harder." In the Korean sheet the same two are 「더 증명하지 않아도 돼」 and 「더 애쓰지 않아도 돼」.
Where the whispers sit
In the English version the whispers are Korean: 「괜찮아…」, 「네가 자랑스러워…」, 「천천히…」. In the Korean version they are English: "It's okay...", "I'm proud of you...", "Take your time...". The order is the end of Verse 1, the chorus, the final chorus. "It's okay" and "Take your time" are also words in the title of this album's second song. We note only that the same words return; whether that was intended is not in the document, so we do not say.
What the sound spec shows
The tempo is 68 BPM and the genre is Ambient Lo-fi. The instrument field lists Felt Piano, Warm Nylon Guitar, Soft Strings, Gentle Pads, Vinyl Crackle, and Rain Ambience. The last two are textures, not notes. The vocal field says the final chorus gets a harmony from the opposite gender. We did not check how the actual audio sounds.
What we are not claiming
- Whether splitting the lyrics into two lists was intentional is not in the document. We read two groups on the sheet.
- We did not check the real tempo, instruments or sung words against the audio.
- "Affirmation" is the design document's emotion keyword. It says nothing about how a listener will feel the song.
